Our story

Erin and Leigh met in kindergarten and became immediate friends. They both lived in a small mill town in Western North Carolina. The two roller-skated on weekends, played with dolls, and loved Erin’s mom’s chicken casserole.

Leigh moved to another school in the area and they didn’t see each other again until high school senior year. It didn’t take long for them to pick up where they left off. It was the 90s. They rode around in cars, tempted trouble, went with each other to get piercings. You know, basic teenage stuff. They parted ways after high school, each following their own path.

Years later through Facebook, Leigh and Erin reconnected, met for BBQs and music concerts, double dated with their husbands, and attended their high school reunion together. Close friends yet again.

One afternoon, Erin called Leigh and said, “We’re moving to Charleston!” Leigh replied, “No way! We are too!”

Once settled in Charleston (Leigh on Johns Island and Erin on James Island), Erin told Leigh about a project she’d started named “Hippie Beaches”, and asked if Leigh wanted to be part of it. Hippie Beaches makes handmade goods, using their mutual love of nature as inspiration. They both make pottery and other mixed media art using sustainable, and many times, local materials.

You can find the Hippie Beaches booth at Patina Market on James Island, SC, as well as local markets, and online.
